The transportation providers of YRC Worldwide Inc. participate in programs and processes for protecting and preserving the environment. These strategies have the twin goals of reducing our carbon footprint while optimizing our corporate resources. Our industry-leading companies effectively and aggressively promote greenhouse gas reduction strategies, waste reduction and conservation across their daily operations.
2012 Destination Green Updates
- We continue to aggressively address greenhouse gas reduction strategies by limiting truck speeds to 62/63 mph, using hotel rooms for driver stays instead of idling our trucks overnight, extensively using intermodal service with our railroad providers, setting limits on daily idling with over-the-road and city operations, using environmentally efficient longer combination vehicles where allowed and practicing one of the most aggressive tire pressure inflation and monitoring programs in the industry.
- Our large-scale network optimization strategy continually reduces empty mile percentages and creates new lane densities that optimize equipment use. Our network of service centers allows us to effectively “car pool” for shipments. Eliminating empty miles and optimizing equipment use have a substantial effect on decreasing our carbon footprint.
- Our newest vehicles with the most recent NOx and particulate matter reduction devices run the highest number of miles compared to other units in the fleet.
- We are testing two diesel electric hybrids in our fleet. These vehicles are assigned to a city pick up and delivery center in a large metropolitan area. We are teaching the drivers how to optimize fuel efficiency with the hybrid trucks. We will assess the benefits of further vehicle deployment as this pilot project develops.
- We have initiated purchase of fuel-efficient tires that show potential for a 4 percent increase in fuel efficiency and related emissions reduction. These new fuel-efficient tires will be phased into the fleet systemwide. We will analyze and assess the benefits of this initiative as tires are installed.
- We recycle aluminum, steel and unusable cardboard dunnage, office paper, oil, antifreeze, cleaning solvents, tires and batteries.
- To reduce energy consumption, we recycle light bulb fixtures in our buildings, and replace lighting fixtures with low-wattage lamps.
- We actively encourage use of electronic bills of lading, invoices and other e-commerce tools to reduce paper consumption for all supply-chain partners.
- To prevent unwanted products from entering the waste stream or disposal process, chemical shipments deemed unacceptable by a shipper or consignee are recovered, repackaged and offered for sale to the public through a physical location and on the Internet.
- Transportation services for product returns and reverse logistics offered by the YRC Worldwide companies prevent pollution and minimize waste in shipment movement.
- We use on-site fueling stations to eliminate miles and idling time. Also, to eliminate miles associated with delivering fuel to service stations, we tie directly into our fuel-provider’s pipeline where possible.
- We use biodiesel fuel in the respective fleets at select sites across the United States. To continue direct pipeline supply while maintaining use of biodiesel, we have deployed on-site biodiesel blending systems.
- Use of ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD) at all company-owned fueling sites produces cleaner emissions of NOx (nitrogen oxides) and particulate matter. Also, all YRC Worldwide companies introduced low-emission diesel (LED) tractors into their respective fleets in 2007.
- New engine oil and lubricant technologies used to extend service intervals and increase fuel economy to greatly reduce waste-product generation continue to be evaluated.
- We are evaluating five tractors that have been retrofitted with after-market diesel particulate filters, which can reduce emissions by as much as 85 percent.
- We have introduced trailer side-skirts to increase the fuel economy of Company vehicles.
