Green Alliances
YRC Worldwide’s initiatives to preserve and protect the environment include: SmartWay partnership, environmentally sensitive supply
-chain solutions, and collaboration and outreach.
SmartWay partnership
We are a charter member of SmartWay and all our
companies participate in this program. We worked closely with the EPA to develop the SmartWay program. YRC Worldwide and subsidiary YRC Logistics received the SmartWay Environmental Excellence Award in 2006. The award recognized all YRC Worldwide
companies for improvements in fuel economy. YRC Worldwide
companies are the only major providers of less-than-truckload services to receive the award. YRC Logistics was honored for developing environmentally sensitive supply-chain management strategies for clients. We are in discussions with the EPA SmartWay staff to be one of the first companies to operate a SmartWay vehicle. It will be equipped with the latest technologies for fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. Learn more about YRC Worldwide and SmartWay.
Environmentally sensitive supply-chain solutions
The YRC Worldwide subsidiary, YRC Logistics, is a global logistics provider and
is at the forefront of green initiatives. YRC Logistics designs efficient supply chains through flow-through solutions, distribution-center analysis, and transportation management. Efficient supply chains use
fewer resources. YRC Logistics worked with the EPA Shipper Fleet Performance Model to create a more-comprehensive
model of fuel use. The model initially focused on ground and rail transportation. YRC Logistics expanded the model to include air and ocean.
The expanded model allows shippers to calculate their total emissions footprint against the
effect of other strategies (i.e., route optimization, modal shifts, shipment consolidation, and network redesign). YRC Logistics also uses the EPA Shipper Fleet Performance Model to determine the percentage of a client’s goods moved on EPA SmartWay Partnership carriers vs. non-SmartWay Partnership carriers.
Collaboration and outreach
YRC Worldwide is participating in Climate Forum, sponsored by Resources for the Future Foundation. The forum includes auto manufacturers, fuel producers,
and stationary emissions sources. Discussions include the cap
and trade system or carbon tax. We are also working with the American Trucking Aassociations to study Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for equipment and
to identify ways to make new EPA cleaner-burning engines more fuel efficient. |
